How to break the ice on a first date

5 ways to break the ice on your first date

Before we get into my five ways to break the ice on your first date, let’s talk about breaking the ice online first

When you embark on your online dating journey it can be daunting. You have no clue how to break the ice with any potential matches and the thought of an actual first date seems a million miles away.

You know what? Take a break and chillax a bit. This isn’t rocket science and it’s not as hard as you think.

Before we get into my five ways to break the ice on your first date, let’s talk about events leading up to that.

The getting to know you online bit.

You get a hit (not literally), someone likes your profile and now it’s your turn to respond. Where do you start? What do you say?

There are some great conversation starters out there so I thought I’d share a few of my favourites. Here’s a couple of questions that usually get a great reaction.

“If you could do something illegal and not get caught, what would it be?”

This is a great question because not only does it show your sense of humour, but you also get to find out what theirs is like. Either that or their answer will be a serious red flag and you can make a run for it early on!!!

“How would your friends describe you”

I like this one because they will likely only share the good stuff with you. If things go well, you may just meet said friends and it will make for a great anecdote when you find out the truth!

Once you’ve broken the ice and you’ve got to know each other a little better, inevitably, that first date will creep up.

Meeting face to face and meeting online are two very different entities. For a start, it’s a lot easier to hide behind a laptop than it is a menu, and you may find that all that groundwork goes out the window once you’re in the same room together.

Queue the awkward silence.

Fear not. I’ve got you covered.

Here are my five ways to break the ice on a first date

Now granted, you need a sense of humour and a need for fun if you’re going to use any of these. Take what I’m saying with a pinch of salt or simply adapt my ideas to fit your own vibe.

1 – Two truths and one lie

Come on, I know you’ve played it. This is a great way to break the ice on a first date because not only will it give the other person the chance to tell you something about themselves, but it will also have you both giggling when you get it wrong.

And you will get it wrong!

2 – 20 questions

Admittedly, this is a little more intense and you may want to limit it to 5-10 questions each. Take it in turns and each of you ask the other a certain number of questions in a short space of time. A great way to get you thinking, put you under a little (fun) pressure and find out if you have something in common.

3 – Lolly pop game

There’s two ways to look at this game. You can either take the opportunity to get a little seductive (don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about), or you can play by the actual rules.

Have a pot with several different flavoured lolly pops. Each take a turn to pick one and the chosen flavour will dictate your answers.

Let’s say you chose a strawberry flavour. You use this word as an acronym to describe yourself.

For example,

  • Sexy
  • Time conscious (not sure that’s a seller on a first date)
  • Real
  • Witty
  • Brave

You get the picture!

4 – Would you rather

I don’t really need to describe this game. Just come up with a few questions where you ask the other person what they would rather do. Be prepared though, this could be a real eye opener!

5 – Show and tell

If you’re up for a bit of preparation, this could be great fun. Each of you must bring an item with you that really shows off your personality. Be prepared to answer questions on how it describes you and why you chose that item.

First dates are fun and once you’ve broken the ice, you can move on and enjoy a romantic evening together. Don’t take it too seriously, be prepared to laugh (a lot) and what starts off as a nerve-wracking idea should end up being a great night!
