As an online dating photographer, I meet a lot of singles. Those who are new to the online dating game as well as some seasoned daters.
But no matter how experienced my clients are at online dating, there are a few questions I always get asked.
I’ve been doing this a while now and there aren’t many questions I haven’t heard. When you hire a professional online dating photographer, you need to feel comfortable in asking them what you want to know. No question is silly, and I guarantee, there is no question I haven’t heard before.
Here’s a few of my most asked questions.
My 5 most frequently asked questions as an online dating photographer
1 - How many photos do I need?
There isn’t really a simple answer to this question, it really comes down to how seriously you are taking it. The obvious answer is, the more you get, the more often you can update your profile which in turn, makes sure it never goes stale.
Don’t forget that if you book a photo shoot with a professional photographer, the quality will be amazing, and those photos can be used anywhere. So, even if you meet the love of your life after only a week of online dating, you can use your pictures for other online profiles, CV’s or anywhere else you choose.
Most of my clients opt for around 16 photos (check out my Maxi Dating Photo Shoot). Because they want to maximise them at every opportunity. Remember, you will look amazing, and I promise, you’ll want to share them!
2 - What is my biggest online dating tip?
Show up and be yourself. Never try to portray someone you’re not because you’re going to set yourself up to fail. In most cases, the end goal is to actually meet someone so by not being yourself online, you are probably only going to get one date!
3 - What makes a bad profile picture?
Hmm, where do I start? There are a few things. Firstly, a staged environment. A dating site isn’t LinkedIn, and your profile picture should be full of personality. Going to a studio and standing in front of a bland screen just isn’t going to cut it.
Filters are also a no-no. I am often asked by my clients if I can filter the image and I will always so no. Why? Because you don’t need it. Filters are obvious and it all comes back to showing the real you. A good photographer will be able to bring out the best in you without any use online tools.
4 - Do selfies make good online dating photos?
In short, no. A selfie is never going to show you at your best and to be fair, if you’re taking a selfie, it’s likely that you’re filtering it to the high hills. Not only this, but with a selfie you are massively over manipulating how your face looks – which isn’t what others see when they look at you.
Selfies only show part of the picture (in more ways than one), they are staged, they are not full body shots and more often than not, you took it in the bathroom. Those days are gone!
5 - What should I wear?
This is probably in my top 3 most common questions. Firstly, relax. You should be comfortable in your clothing. You will have to look at these photos time and time again so if you hate what you’re wearing, it’s just not going to work.
I love bright colours, but we do tend to be drawn to colours that suit us so stick with what you know. And again, be you. If you are normally a jeans and hoodie kind of guy, that’s fine. If you’re a summer dress and heels kind of gal, also cool!
